  • Climate: Sub-tropical, very humid summers Nov to March, warm winters, all year rainfall peaking in summer.
  • Malaria - no-risk area (non-drug measurements recommended). The season starts October, peaks Feb/Mar and ends May. Drug-related precaution is your choice and responsibility. Always have insect repellent for your body.
  • Permits: Ensure you have the necessary documents for activities that require permits.
  • Licences: All licences must be on your person and for fishing. No trade is permitted. It is your responsibility to familiarise yourself with the sizes and bag limits for fishing etc. and areas that allow for a specific activity.
  • Driving on the beach is illegal. ALL road rules apply in town. Speed Limit 40km/h.
  • Swimming in the sea: Beaches are unprotected (no shark nets) with no lifeguards. Be very careful of rip currents and strong side currents.
  • NO Swimming in dams, lakes, pans due to crocodiles in all of them.
  • Wild Animals move freely as the town is surrounded by a conservation area. Do NOT feed any wild animals, especially the Vervet monkeys and crocodiles. Do not touch hippos or get close to them.
  • Adhere to closing and opening times of the reserves and parks that you visit. Entrance into Eastern Shores is limited to 125 vehicles - over long weekends and peak seasons*. You will be charged fine fees for the late exit.
  • Peak Seasons are all long weekends (check public holidays) and December school holidays. Peak Season-long weekends ensure you have enough cash as ATMs empty quick and do not get filled till after the long weekend.
  • Restaurants: Children are welcome at all, book for special occasions, last orders between 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm. Sports screens and bar at most.

Electricity and Water

  • We have no control over electricity availability. During load shedding/ off times we may use a generator for a few lights inside the cottages and outside and run the water pump. Some cottages have gas stoves, if not, a gas bottle with cooker top will be available for boiling water and some creative cooking. The braai can also be used for cooking.
  • The generator will be used during peak times in the morning and evening off times only. Morning start time is 7:30 am to 9 am and between 6 pm and 9 pm.
  • Water supply is very affected by the drought and supply is unreliable, so we have our own storage tanks which are used most of the time with a pressure pump system. Water may not be the best quality as we do not control the process before it gets here. Water is treated with much chlorine.
  • Water supply is affected during and after power cuts. We have extra storage water tanks on-premises, not for drinking though. Lights and water pump may not be able to run at the same time, depending on capacity.
  • The beach, sun and reserves (animals) are not affected by electricity and you can still enjoy your visit and the environment. Restaurants operate (except certain machines) during power outages/load shedding. Check if card payment accepted during off times.
